Ingredients

  • 4 C all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ½ stick butter
  • 1 tbsp fresh herbs rosemary, sage, thyme
  • 4 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 ½ - 2 C milk
  • 1 egg divided
  • 1 C cheese
  • 1 tbsp water

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 425°F and place a sheet of baking parchment in an oven-safe pan or dutch oven.
  • In a pan on the stove, heat the butter, herbs, and garlic until fragrant. Meanwhile, combine the flour, salt, baking soda, and baking powder in a large bowl.
  • Remove the butter herb mixture from the stove and add one cup of the milk, stir, add the egg, reserving a tablespoon of the egg white for later, stir again, and pour the wet ingredients into the dry.
  • Add ½ - ¾ cup more milk until a dough forms. Knead the cheese into the dough and work it all together to form a ball. Place it in the dutch oven.
  • Combine the remaining egg white with 1 tbsp of water and brush over the dough.
  • Bake it for 30-40 minutes or until golden brown on top and a knife inserted comes out clean. Remove it from the oven and brush with butter and top with extra cheese and herbs, if desired.
