History
St. John Chrysostom, whose name literally means “golden mouth,” is perhaps best known for his rich preaching. His sermons have been beloved by Christians for centuries and will likely continue to be appreciated for the way in which they meet listeners where they are and speak God’s Word in a tangible, clear, and accessible manner.
His sermon repertoire is quite large, with hundreds of exegetical homilies available on both the New Testament and Old Testament, especially featuring sermons on the writings of St. Paul and the Book of Genesis. Altogether he wrote 17 treatises, more than 700 homilies, commentaries on Matthew and the Pauline epistles, and 241 letters that have been kept to this day.
“Golden Mouth” Preaching
It is prudent for us to continue to read the sermons of St. John, featuring them and using them in our daily life as the opportunity arises. Due to the vast number of them available, there is certainly something that will suit whatever you may need, whether that be encouragement in family or married life, sermons for specific feasts and seasons of the Church year, sermons concerning being a priest, on wealth and poverty, or living simply.
